Amazing! They Changed Their Sex Through…

If you’ve been anywhere near social media over the past week or so, you will have seen the results of a new Snapchat filter, which can alter your appearance, and allow you to take on a gender-swapped alter-ego.

Is it cute?

The uncanny pictures have been flooding timelines for days with airbrushed, idealized images of what people might look like if they were born as the opposite sex.

Snapchat filters work by recognizing that there’s a face in the camera, finding facial features and overlaying AR (augmented reality) effects onto them.

In this case, the male filter gives users a squarer jaw, facial hair, shortened lashes and erases long hair from view.

The female filter gives users longer hair, finer features, blemish-free skin, and make-up effects like lipstick and blusher.

It may have led you to wonder just what you might look like if you’d been born the opposite sex. So here are some fabulous photos reimagined as the opposite sex through its filter.

‘Not cute’

The new filter has been causing some controversy but has at least had the unintended consequence of opening men up to the kind of harassment countless women face on a daily basis through dating apps like Tinder.

A lot of men have been setting up Tinder profiles using their new feminine image as a profile picture.

Needless to say, the filter’s idealized standard of beauty has had many fellow males falling for the trick, and these ‘catfishing’ users have in many cases been inundated with replies from potential ‘suitors’.

But it hasn’t all been fun and games. Some have accused the gender-swapping filter of making a "joke” out of the act of transitioning.

This filter is literally an instant transition, and the humorous way I’m seeing it shared is… not cute,” said Out‘s Rose Dommu.

Your funny tweet about how to fish you look with a hairless, shaved down the chin and luscious locks might not be funny to everyone,” they said.

Wikipedia Blocked in China in All Languages!

All language editions of Wikipedia have been blocked in mainland China since April, the Wikimedia Foundation has confirmed.

Wikipedia Blocked in China in All Languages!

Internet censorship researchers found that Wikipedia had joined thousands of other websites which cannot be accessed in China.

The country had previously banned the Chinese language version of the site, but the block has now been expanded.

Wikimedia said it had received “no notice” of the move.

In a statement, the foundation said: “In late April, the Wikimedia Foundation determined that Wikipedia was no longer accessible in China. After closely analyzing our internal traffic reports, we can confirm that Wikipedia is currently blocked across all language versions.”

The free community-edited encyclopedia has been intermittently blocked by authorities around the world.

In 2017, the site was blocked in Turkey and it has been blocked intermittently in Venezuela this year.

Man Detained in China for His “Illegal” Joke

A man has been detained in eastern China for giving his dogs “illegal” names, it’s reported.

According to popular newspaper Beijing News, a dog breeder in his early 30s surnamed Ban in eastern Anhui Province was summoned by the police on Monday, after posting on mobile messenger WeChat that he had two new dogs, named Chengguan and Xieguan.

The names attracted controversy because they refer to government and civil service workers respectively.

“Chengguan” are officials employed in urban areas to tackle low-level crime, and “Xieguan” are informal community workers such as traffic assistants.

The paper says that Mr. Ban gave the dogs the names “for fun“, but the authorities have failed to see the funny side – particularly with regards to the former.

The Yingzhou Police said that they had immediately launched an investigation into the man, who they say had issued “insulting information… against law enforcement personnel“.

They added that “in accordance with the relevant provisions of the People’s Republic of China Law on Public Security“, he must spend 10 days in an administrative detention center in the city of Xiangyang.

A police officer surnamed Li told Beijing News that Mr. Ban had been increasingly provocative on his WeChat account, and says that his actions had “caused great harm to the nation and the city’s urban management, in terms of their feelings“.

Mr. Ban says he regrets his actions, with Beijing News quoting him as saying “I didn’t know the law; I didn’t know this was illegal.

While some are of the view that he was “looking for trouble“, his arrest has been met with much shock on the popular Sina Weibo microblog.

Many users voice concern about the conditions under which Mr. Ban was detained. “Can you tell me which law stipulates that dogs can’t be called Chengguan?” one user asks. Another asks: “What other words could you be imprisoned for?

Some users have been joking that Mr. Ban was detained for “suspected subversion of state power” or “revealing state secrets“, implying that the chengguan is, actually, dog.

OMG! Samsung&Huawei Unexpectedly Agree to Settle Patents Dispute

On April 16th, 2019, Apple and Qualcomm settled the patent fight. On May 14th, 2019, Huawei and Samsung have also settled patent disputes globally over more than 40 lawsuits in 8 years.

Huawei & Samsung

In 2011, cross-licensing patent issues between Huawei and Samsung patent have been negotiated many times and there was no result.

In 2016, the two mobile phone manufacturers sued each other for breach of contract and patent infringement. In 2017, Samsung compensate for Huawei’s economic loss of 80 million yuan for infringement of patent,

In 2019, Samsung and Huawei jointly requested the court to suspend their intellectual property disputes on February 25th. The two parties reached a framework patent license agreement, which finally reached a global settlement on May 14th.

Standards-Essential Patents

Whether Apple, Qualcomm, Huawei or Samsung, they are all negotiating: the share of Standard- Essential Patent rights in the industry.

SEP: a patent that claims an invention that must be used to comply with a technical standard. For example, the 5GPP standard in the field of communications, the wireless communication technology standard developed by the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), and the Blu-ray technology standard.

Patent technology holders can enjoy and control patents on their own, or they can waive exclusive proprietary technology and charge other users a reasonable royalty to allow them to use.

Cross-licensing patent

Take the mobile phone industry as an example. Each company has its own patented technology. If the enterprises have their own control, the whole industry will have no technical exchanges. The same products may have different production standards, and the whole industry is in a chaotic state.

In order to fully implement their own technology and achieve maximum economic benefits, many companies will reach a “Patent License Agreement“, just like the cooperation between Apple and Qualcomm, and the settlement of Huawei and Samsung.

Patent License Agreement: a contract between the patent owner (licensor) and a licensee that defines the terms under which the licensee may make, sell, and use a patented invention. The agreement also provides how royalties will be paid to the patent owner.

Achieving an agreement means that the two parties reach a patent share, including patent right, that is, cross-licensing patent.
