Categories of international driving document 

Category A

Motorcycles with or without a side car, invalid carriages and three-wheeled motor vehicles with an unladen weight not exceeding 400kg(900 lb)

Category B

Motor vehicles used for the transport of passengers and comprising in addition to the driver’s seat at most eight seats or those used for the transport of goods and having a permissible maximum weight not exceeding 3500kg(7700 lb). Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a light trailer.

Category C

Motor vehicles used for the transport of goods and of which the permissible maximum weight exceeds 3500kg(7700 lbs). Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a light trailer.

Category D

Motor vehicles used for the transport of passengers and comprising in addition to the driver’s seat, mord than eight seats. Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a light trailer.

Category E

Motor vehicles of category B, C or D, as autorized above with other that a light trailer.

What is international driving document(IDD)

International driving document is a translated qualification certificate that allows holders to drive a private motor vehicle in a foreignany country. According to CONVENTION ON ROAD TRAFFIC, the documents are issued by authorized international organizations to drivers with domestic licenses and it serves as a purpose to remove the barriers of license requirements by different countries when drive aboardabroad.  

Function of international driving document

An international driving document is a proof with eight different languages, thereinto five official languages of the United Nations, including English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese, allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle in other countries. International driving document can remove the language barriers between holders and police officers when using national driving licenses abroad.

International driving document is a translated text of your domestic driving license with eight common languages and is to prove that you can drive independently, serving as a convenience for you to drive or rent car abroad. For your safety, please ensure the legality and validity of your domestic driving license. In view of the different laws between countries, please have a good knowledge of the transportation laws of the countries you are about to leave for. To be valid, the IDD must be accompanied by a valid driving licence issued in the holder’s country of residence.Besides, Some countries and regionsareas don not recognise the translated text. CONVENTION ON ROAD TRAFFIC

For the convenience of license holders driving in countries that are the parties to the convention, 1968 convention stipulates that the domestic licence can be used directly in a foreign jurisdiction that is a party to that convention. Nevertheless, at present, the standard of convention on road traffic and license system in China are different from international’s.

How to ensure the validity of international driving document?

To be valid, the IDD must be accompanied by a valid driving licence issued in the holder’s country of residence. That is to say, IDD holders must keep the domestic driving license when driving abroad. Otherwise, the police officers will consider the IDD invalid.
