Over 70% of Post 90s Suffer from Hair Loss

If you feel like you are losing your hair, you are not alone. For those born in the 1990s, “almost going bald” has been a catchphrase on Chinese social media for years.

Though some say it is a self-mockery amid mounting stress at work, more young men, many still at college, are seeing receding hairlines.

A survey shows that baldness is coming earlier to young Chinese. In the country, more than 250 million people suffer from hair loss and more men than women complain about excessive balding.

The post-1980s and post-1990s generations account for over 70 percent of the population, according to the China Association of Health Promotion and Education.

In a survey of 643 universities by China Youth Daily, more than half of the college students said they suffered from hair loss and over 60 percent had taken measures to slow it.

30-year-old Yu, a university lecturer, said he started to get serious about preventing hair loss when he was a sophomore.

Like many young Chinese who fret over thinning hair, Yu said the problem had proved to be a major headache in finding a life partner and it could sometimes count against them in job interviews.

“Daily loss of hair is a normal occurrence. In fact, the average person loses between 50 to 100 hairs a day,” said Jia Lijun with the Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. “However, there are certain factors that can cause young people to shed more than usual, such as stress, lack of exercise and insomnia.”

Increasingly stressful lives are leading to hair thinning and hair loss. Yu said he always stayed up late due to a heavy study load at college and his busy work life resulted in a poor diet.

Excessive stress, anxiety and poor health habits usually lead to hormone imbalances and premature baldness, Jia said.

As the problem nags more younger Chinese, many admit that hair loss has affected their confidence, said Tan Wenyong with the Shenzhen Hospital of Southern Medical University.

Once a niche market, hair-growth products have grown into a multi-billion yuan industry.

Data released by China’s National Health Commission indicates that the country’s hair health industry will expand by 260 percent annually in the following decade and urban people’s spending on hair care products and hair-loss treatment will surge by 30 percent in the years to come.

In early February, Yu spent nearly 100,000 yuan (about $14,925) on a hair transplant with a per graft-fee of 16 yuan. “The surgery almost wiped out all my savings, but I felt it worthwhile because I regained the thickness of my hair as well as my confidence,” Yu said.

Attention! Official Warning Over Traveling to US!

One day after China issued a warning over studying in the US, two of the country’s key ministries on Tuesday issued another alert over travel to the US, the latest measure to counter the negative consequences Chinese people are facing after the escalation of the US-initiated trade war, which has spread beyond broad economic measures to target the technology, education and tourism sectors.

US law enforcement departments have been increasingly harassing Chinese nationals in the US by questioning them as they enter or exit the country, as well as talking to them in their homes, Chen Xiongfeng, deputy director-general of the Department of Consular Affairs of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a Tuesday press conference in Beijing.

Chen said that Chinese nationals traveling to the US and Chinese companies operating in the US should be on alert to their safety and take preventive measures, and should contact Chinese embassies if necessary.

Echoing Chen, Yu Jiannan, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, said that according to information from Chinese consulates, the rate of crime, including theft, has increased recently in the US, so Chinese nationals should be cautious when traveling to the US and take preventive measures and be alert to their surroundings.

Chen said the travel warning was issued as Chinese consulates across the US have received a lot of complaints from Chinese nationals after they were harassed by American law enforcement departments.

The travel warning is also out of concern over the safety of Chinese nationals, Yu said, noting that the US, despite its position as a major travel destination for Chinese tourists, often experiences incidents of violent crimes which could threaten the safety of Chinese nationals in the North American country.

Twelve people died during the recent tragedy in Virginia Beach on May 31 US time.

The number of Chinese tourists to the US fell 5.7 percent in 2018 to 2.9 million. It was the first time since 2003 that the number of Chinese travelers to the US slipped from the previous year, the Associated Press reported in May.

Yu said that roughly 150 million trips were made abroad in 2018. Tourists choose destinations based on their own will and on the situation of the destination. “Undoubtedly, the most important factor people consider is safety. Chinese tourists will surely make wise choices and cautiously evaluate their travel destinations,” said Yu.

Bai Ming, deputy director of the Ministry of Commerce’s International Market Research Institute, told the Global Times  that the number of Chinese tourists to the US far outnumbered those traveling from the US to China, and the US tourism industry is heavily dependent on the rapidly increasing number of Chinese tourists, so a drop in the number of  travelers will exert a heavy blow on relevant US industries.

It shows that the ongoing trade friction between the two countries has begun to hurt people-to-people exchanges in the two countries, Bai said.

An employee from a Shanghai-based travel agency, who asked for anonymity, told the Global Times that summer is the peak time for Chinese to travel to the US, but this year, more people have been consulting about safety and tightened visa policies in the US.

Also, the number of tourists applying for US visas via their platform had also dropped drastically during this period of time.

Ramadan

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims. It is believed that it is during this month that Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur’an to the Prophet Mohammed.

During Ramadan, all Muslims over the age of about 12, with some exceptions, are expected to fast between dawn and sunset.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the shahada (Declaration of Faith), daily prayer, Zakat (charity), and pilgrimage for Muslims who are financially and physically able.

During Ramadan, the day starts early so that people can eat a pre-fast meal before dawn. This meal, called Suhoor, is important as it will keep them going through the day.

What Does Eid-ul-Fitr Mean?

Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the month of fasting. There are many Eid traditions, mainly centered around family, food, generosity, and festivities.

Eid-ul-Fitr translates from Arabic as, ‘the festival of the breaking of the fast’, and is a celebration which traditionally takes place over a three-day period.

The festival of Eid holds great importance in Islam and is a time for loved ones and communities to come together.

We celebrate Eid to mark the conclusion of the blessed month of Ramadan, which commemorates the moment when the Holy Quran was first revealed to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). After the month of sacrifice and reflection, Eid is a time to rejoice with family and friends and exchange gifts with loved ones.

The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.

So, whoever sights the new moon of the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days.

Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and wants for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that to which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful.

Quran 2:185

Ways to Celebrate Eid

The first day of Eid follows an important routine that must be carried out throughout the day to properly show your devotion to Allah.

The day begins by greeting your family and performing the Fajr salah (dawn prayer) followed by the ritual of ‘ghusl’, meaning to purify the whole body through an act of cleansing.

Following the ablution (the act of washing oneself in the intent of purification) you, together with your family, will prepare your clothing for the day. Traditionally, new ornate clothing is purchased for the occasion, although some people choose to wear their finest outfits.

Families will then go to the local Masjid and worship in the congregation before greeting one another with “Eid Mubarak“, which translates to ‘have a blessed Eid‘. Before the beginning of Eid prayers, Zakat al-Fitr must be paid. This is the donation that goes to the poor and needy, allowing those who would normally go without to join in the celebrations of this Holy day.

Eid Mubarak!

It’s also traditional to exchange gifts, particularly between young children and close family members. This holiday is also known as “The Lesser Eid” or “Sweet Eid” due to the increased number of sweet snacks available and because this day holds less importance in the Islamic calendar than Eid-ul-Adha.

Worship God and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, the poor, the neighbor who is near to kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet) …  Verily, God does not like such as are proud and boastful.

  Quran 4:36

Therefore, Eid Mubarak everyone! HACOS wish this Eid bring you joy & peace. عيد سعيد و مبارك
