In our previous article, we’ve listed documents required to obtain the certificate:

  • Receipt of reporting the case issued by the police station (step 1)
  • Registration form of temporary residence
  • Photocopy of your passport
  • Photocopy of your Residence Permit/Chinese visa (if you have)
  • Other relevant documents
But we found that the required materials may vary from different cities. You may also need to provide your recent bareheaded photos and your driving license, for example. So check the local rules before your application

STEP 3

Go to the embassy or consulate of your country to apply for a new passport

You should apply for a new passport at your own embassy or consulate in the city with the certificate of reporting the loss of a foreigner’s passport.

  • REMINDERS
The validity of a Confirmation of Reporting the Loss of Passport (step 2) is 30 days
Within 30 days, you must apply for a new passport or replacing certificate at your embassy or consulate in China and apply for a visa or residence permit.

Anyone who fails to apply for a new passport and visa within 30 days shall be punished by the public security authorities for illegally staying in China.

STEP 4

Go to the local authority to apply for the visa or residence permit

After obtaining the new passport, you need to go to the exit and entry administration department to apply for the corresponding Chinese visa or Residence Permit.

To make sure you can continue your stay in China or exit China, you must apply for a new Chinese visa or Residence Permit immediately after you get a new passport or replacing certificates.

TIPS

There’s always more than one way to find your lost things. If you lost your passport or other important things in a taxi, for example, try to do this to find them back:

  • Check the receipt and you can get detailed info about the taxi you’ve taken.
  • Call the probable taxi company if you forget to get the receipt but remember the taxi’s body color or other features.
  • Using WeChat to report your loss.

To avoid the loss, please take good care of your passport when you still have them:

  • Scan your passport, keep one in your computer and bring one with you.
  • Fill in the emergency contact on the last page of your passport, in case someone who picks it know who to contact with.
