An international scientific team has unveiled a landmark achievement in astrophysics: the first true image of a black hole.

Chinese space experts hailed the event as a milestone and said it is the most direct evidence of the existence of the black hole.

Team work

 

The EHT is a consortium of more than 200 scientists that has been in the works for about two decades.

It’s a truly international endeavor; funding over the years has come from the U.S. National Science Foundation and many other organizations in countries around the world.

 

Correlating and calibrating the data was tricky. And the team took great care with this work, given the momentous nature of the find.

So much data

 

The EHT team has used this megascope to study the two supermassive black holes for two weeklong stretches to date — once in April 2017 and again the following year. The new imagery comes from the first observing run.

For one thing, each night of observing generated about 1 petabyte of data, resulting in such a haul that the team has to move its information from place to place the old-fashioned way.

What it all means

 

The EHT project has two main goals, Psaltis said: 

 

• to image an event horizon for the first time ever;

• to help determine if Einstein’s theory of general relativity needs any revisions.

The new results should also help scientists get a better handle on black holes, he and other researchers said.

A new perspective?

 

The contributions in this arena could be significant.

 

This image, which gave the masses a glimpse of our planet as it really is — a lonely outpost of life in an infinite sea of darkness — is widely credited with helping to spur the environmental movement.

 

Seeing a picture of the black hole or its silhouette, anyway — “is the stuff of science fiction,” Harrison said. And we’ve seen just the project’s first few photos, she added: “They’re only going to get better.”

Chatting online is now a national pastime in China, especially among the post-’90s generation. To the uninitiated however, online chats can seem like the wild west of polite conversation.

Never send an “are you there?” without any follow-up messages. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.

Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send personal information by voice message — that is hard to note down.

If your friends or colleagues are posting about the same things on their WeChat Moments, be careful to “like” each and every one, or else ignore them all. Otherwise, the people you miss might be upset with you!

Never post videos you’ve recorded at a concert, because all anyone can hear is the audience’s screams.

 

 

Never share “chain messages” with things like “repost, or your family will be cursed” or “repost, and your parents will live longer”. Such messages are nothing but spam, and emotionally manipulative.

 

Avoid starting long conversations under other people’s Moments, it will just make them want to delete their post.

Other chat taboos

 

Avoid mixing English and Chinese. Stick to one language. Why combine the two?

 

Don’t use a third language, it only makes you look pretentious. And if not for the automatic translate function, no one would know what you mean! 

Don’t split a complete sentence into several different messages. No one wants to scroll and scroll just to read what you have to say.

 

 

Think twice before adding a meme or GIF after every message. They’re useful, but you lessen their impact with overuse.

Applicants can apply online for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan personal travel endorsements, team travel endorsements; select the place to apply for the application online, fill out the application form, online approval, and then hold the Hong Kong and Macao Pass or the Mainland Residents Traveling to Taiwan Permit to pay the license and print the endorsement.

提供往来港澳台旅游签注申办服务。申请人可以在线申请赴港澳台个人旅游签注、团队旅游签注，在线选择办证地点，填写申请表，线上审批通过后，持往来港澳通行证或往来台湾通行证到办证地点缴费并打印签注。

Applicants can make an appointment online for passports, Hong Kong and Macau Pass and endorsements, Mainland Residents Traveling to Taiwan Permit and endorsements, fill in the application form online, and make appointments for the time and place of the application.

Subsequently, according to the appointment time, the application materials will be submitted to the reception hall to complete the procedures of fingerprint collection, photography, and payment.

You can check the number of valid remaining times for your endorsements in Hong Kong and Macao and to Taiwan.

Applicants can check the office address (map location), office hours, and telephone number of the entry and exit permit halls across the country. Detailed service guides for handling various types of entry and exit documents can be found online.

The service will consist of the website http://s.nia.gov.cn, an app of NIA and mini-programs attached to WeChat and Alipay.

用户可通过平台网站、移民局App、微信和支付宝端小程序等方式注册使用。国家移民管理局政务服务平台的网址是：https://s.nia.gov.cn.

It is said that this move is to further facilitate the people to obtain their own entry and exit records or ordinary passport issuance records required for production, life, and economic and social activities. At the same time, an electronic document signed by the National Immigration Service can be generated serving as the certification. 

据了解，为进一步便利人民群众获取用于生产、生活和经济社会活动所需的本人出入境记录或普通护照签发记录信息。同时可生成经国家移民管理局电子签名的电子文件，作为证明文件使用。

不仅如此，自4月1日起，中华人民共和国普通护照、往来港澳通行证、往来台湾通行证等出入境证件实行“全国通办”，即内地居民可在全国任一出入境管理窗口申请办理出入境证件，申办手续与户籍地一致。
