First Photo of Black Hole Presented in Yesterday!

An international scientific team has unveiled a landmark achievement in astrophysics: the first true image of a black hole.

Chinese space experts hailed the event as a milestone and said it is the most direct evidence of the existence of the black hole.

1
Team work

The EHT is a consortium of more than 200 scientists that has been in the works for about two decades.

It’s a truly international endeavor; funding over the years has come from the U.S. National Science Foundation and many other organizations in countries around the world.

Correlating and calibrating the data was tricky. And the team took great care with this work, given the momentous nature of the find.

2
So much data

The EHT team has used this megascope to study the two supermassive black holes for two weeklong stretches to date — once in April 2017 and again the following year. The new imagery comes from the first observing run.

For one thing, each night of observing generated about 1 petabyte of data, resulting in such a haul that the team has to move its information from place to place the old-fashioned way.

3
What it all means

The EHT project has two main goals, Psaltis said:

  • to image an event horizon for the first time ever;

  • to help determine if Einstein’s theory of general relativity needs any revisions.

The new results should also help scientists get a better handle on black holes, he and other researchers said.

4
A new perspective?

The contributions in this arena could be significant.

This image, which gave the masses a glimpse of our planet as it really is — a lonely outpost of life in an infinite sea of darkness — is widely credited with helping to spur the environmental movement.

Seeing a picture of the black hole or its silhouette, anyway — “is the stuff of science fiction,” Harrison said. And we’ve seen just the project’s first few photos, she added: “They’re only going to get better.”

These Sodas Are The Most Valuable Memories in Chinese Heart!

Few can argue that Baijui is the most famous drink in China. This omnipresent liquor is served liberally as a special drink with national characteristics.

Although there is various kind of soda and new beverage in the market, this soda that we used to drink has become a classic taste. Except for Baijiu, here are 7 sodas that citizens in China will never forget.

1
Beijing: Arctic Ocean

If you want to select a soda to represent a city, I want to secure clear backing in “Arctic Ocean” as the first choice of city card for Beijing. For Beijingers, “Arctic Ocean” was not only a bottle of drink but an observer who witness the interchange of society and life, a very core of existence, telling the lifestyle of Beijing.

In November 2011, the “Arctic Ocean” soda that faded out of sight for many years returned to the market. Although the winter is the off-season of the sale of carbonated beverages, the Arctic Ocean soda that has just come back has sold 2.4 million bottles.

Guangzhou : Asia

Until now, Asia soda is still the eternal legacy of Guangzhou people’s mind, the history of Asia soda has been integrated into the blood of Guangzhou city, and become the taste totem of Guangzhou that will never fade.

3
Tianjin: Shanhaiguan

As a local soda in Tianjin, Shanhaiguan Soda is a veritable “Jinmen Famous Drink”. The history of Shanhaiguan Soda can be traced back to the late Qing Dynasty.

In 1902, the British businessman Meshas invested in the Shanhaiguan Steam Water Plant in Tianjin, and the Shanhaiguan soda officially entered the historical stage. Since then, Shanhaiguan soda has quickly swept Tianjin and entered the local upscale Western restaurant.

4
Shenyang : Bawangsi

Bawangsi Soda is a famous brand in Shenyang. Before the appearance of soda, “八王寺” , these three words already were the gilded signboard with fame.

The spring water gushing out from the “八王寺” is cool and sweet. When the emperors of the Qing dynasty came to Shengjing to pay homage to their ancestors, they all liked drinking the spring water from the “八王寺”.

5
Qingdao: Laoshan Cola

Laoshan Cola, born in 1953, was the first carbonated beverage independently developed by China. Although the name also has the word “Cola”, it unlike the Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola and other exotic products, Laoshan Cola is made from cloves, ginger, white peony, black dates, etc., so the taste of Laoshan Cola is pure Chinese native style.

Chongqing: Tianfu Cola

Tianfu cola was born in the 1980s. It was a traditional Chinese medicine drink jointly developed by Chongqing beverage factory and Sichuan Institute of traditional Chinese medicine. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was deeply favored by consumers.

What’s more, Tianfu Cola’s efficacy in regulating the human body is the advantage that “foreign cola” does not have.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do’s & Don’ts!

Chatting online is now a national pastime in China, especially among the post-’90s generation. To the uninitiated however, online chats can seem like the wild west of polite conversation

Yet hidden rules and standards do exist, as long as you take the time to look for them. So today, let’s take a closer look at some WeChat do’s and don’ts.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

General etiquette

1

When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other identifying information. Remember, everybody’s time is precious. If there’s something you want, cut right to the chase.

2

Never send an “are you there?” without any follow-up messages. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

3

Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send personal information by voice message — that is hard to note down.

4

Emojis, GIFs and memes can save the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you. Also, try adding a tilde (“~”) to the end of your messages, it can help soften the tone.

5

Think before you type, and then type quickly. There’s nothing worse than seeing the flickering “typing…” indicator for minutes on end, without anything being received.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

6

You can always judge a person’s mood by the length of their text messages.

7

If the person you’re talking to says “good night” or “I’m going to take a shower” that’s probably not what they’re actually going to do, it’s just an excuse to stop talking to you.

8

Use WeChat to communicate with friends and relatives. Use phone calls for acquaintances and strangers.

9

If someone hesitates for longer than three seconds before saying “yes”, they probably really mean “no”.

10

If you receive these emojis  from friends who are older, read them literally (as a smile, a wave or a laugh). For the post-’90s generation, however, they could indicate speechlessness.

WeChat Moment etiquette

If your friends or colleagues are posting about the same things on their WeChat Moments, be careful to “like” each and every one, or else ignore them all. Otherwise, the people you miss might be upset with you!

Never post videos you’ve recorded at a concert, because all anyone can hear is the audience’s screams.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

Never share “chain messages” with things like “repost, or your family will be cursed” or “repost, and your parents will live longer”. Such messages are nothing but spam, and emotionally manipulative.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

Avoid starting long conversations under other people’s Moments, it will just make them want to delete their post.

Other chat taboos

Avoid mixing English and Chinese. Stick to one language. Why combine the two?

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

Don’t use a third language, it only makes you look pretentious. And if not for the automatic translate function, no one would know what you mean!

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

Don’t split a complete sentence into several different messages. No one wants to scroll and scroll just to read what you have to say.

Avoid Doing These Things in WeChat! Do's & Don'ts!

Think twice before adding a meme or GIF after every message. They’re useful, but you lessen their impact with overuse.
